Canada has a concentrated banking system dominated by the Big Six chartered banks: Bank of Montreal (BMO), Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD), Scotiabank, CIBC, and National Bank of Canada. Beyond the Big Six, this directory also covers credit unions, digital banks, and private-label card programs (retailers, fintechs, and travel/loyalty issuers) that issue cards under a Canadian-flagged BIN.
A defining feature of Canadian card BINs is Interac co-badging. Most Canadian debit cards carry both an international network logo (Visa Debit or Mastercard Debit) and the Interac logo, resulting in BIN ranges that show two brands — for example, Visa / Interac or Mastercard / Interac / Maestro. This is unique to Canada among major global banking markets.

A BIN (Bank Identification Number), also called an IIN (Issuer Identification Number), is the first 6 to 8 digits of a payment card number. It identifies the card network (such as Visa or Mastercard), the issuing bank (such as BMO or RBC), and the card program (credit, debit, or prepaid). Modern cards use 8-digit BINs under ISO 7812.
We track BIN ranges for 102 banks and card issuers with operations in Canada, covering 49,061 BIN ranges in total. You can also enter the first 6 to 8 digits of any Canadian card directly into the lookup tool on our home page for an instant result that includes bank name, card brand, type, and validity.
Interac is Canada's national debit and e-transfer network. Most Canadian debit cards are co-badged: they carry a Visa Debit or Mastercard Debit logo for international use, and an Interac logo for domestic transactions at Canadian point-of-sale terminals. This is why many Canadian BIN ranges list two brands, such as Visa / Interac or Mastercard / Interac / Maestro.
Among the issuers tracked here, BANK OF AMERICA, NATIONAL ASSOCIATION (7,163), WELLS FARGO BANK, N.A. (4,728), JPMORGAN CHASE BANK, N.A. (4,628), U.S. BANK, N.A. (3,106), and COLLABRIA FINANCIAL SERVICES (2,213) hold the largest BIN portfolios. Note that some of these totals are combined across every country the issuer operates in (for example a US-headquartered bank with a Canadian branch), since not every source registry breaks BIN counts out by country.
The Type column in each bank's BIN table shows whether the range is assigned to a Credit, Debit, or Prepaid card. Canadian Visa Debit and Mastercard Debit cards share many BIN ranges with their credit card counterparts, so checking the Type is the only reliable way to distinguish them.
Category (for example Standard, Gold, Infinite, or Business) is visible to all free BINSearchLookup accounts. It is hidden on the public preview so anyone can browse BIN ranges freely, while the full card-program details remain protected against bulk scraping.
BIN assignments change as banks add or retire card programs. BINSearchLookup refreshes its dataset on a rolling basis from card network range registries and issuer disclosures. The last-verified date shown on each bank page reflects when that specific page was last checked. Full sourcing and cadence details are on our methodology page.
No. A BIN identifies the issuer and card program, not an individual account or cardholder. To check whether a specific card number is valid and active in real time — for example for fraud screening — use the free lookup tool or API on our home page. This directory lists BIN ranges only.
Canadian merchants and payment processors use BIN lookups for fraud detection (for example, flagging cards issued in unexpected regions), transaction routing (directing Interac vs. Visa transactions to the right network), card verification during checkout, surcharge eligibility checks (credit vs. debit), and compliance screening. Developers also use BIN data for payment gateway integration testing.
